چکیده
The purpose of the Navigation Economic Technologies (NETS) research program is to develop a standardized and defensible suite of economic tools for navigation improvement evaluation. NETS addresses specific navigation economic evaluation and modeling issues that have been raised inside and outside the Corps and is responsive to our commitment to develop and use peer-reviewed tools, techniques and procedures as expressed in the Civil Works strategic plan. The new tools and techniques developed by the NETS research program are to be based on 1) reviews of economic theory, 2) current practices across the Corps (and elsewhere), 3) data needs and availability, and 4) peer recommendations. The NETS research program has two focus points: expansion of the body of knowledge about the economics underlying uses of the waterways; and creation of a toolbox of practical planning models, methods and techniques that can be applied to a variety of situations. NETS will strive to expand the available body of knowledge about core concepts underlying navigation economic models through the development of scientific papers and reports. For example, NETS will explore how the economic benefits of building new navigation projects are affected by market conditions and/or changes in shipper behaviors, particularly decisions to switch to non-water modes of transportation. The results of such studies will help Corps planners determine whether their economic models are based on realistic premises. The NETS research program will develop a series of practical tools and techniques that can be used by Corps navigation planners. The centerpiece of these efforts will be a suite of simulation models. The suite will include models for forecasting international and domestic traffic flows and how they may change with project improvements. It will also include a regional traffic routing model that identifies the annual quantities from each origin and the routes used to satisfy the forecasted demand at each destination. Finally, the suite will include a microscopic event model that generates and routes individual shipments through a system from commodity origin to destination to evaluate non-structural and reliability based measures. This suite of economic models will enable Corps planners across the country to develop consistent, accurate, useful and comparable analyses regarding the likely impact of changes to navigation infrastructure or systems. NETS research has been accomplished by a team of academicians, contractors and Corps employees in consultation with other Federal agencies, including the US DOT and USDA; and the Corps Planning Centers of Expertise …

Technology lock-in with horizontal and vertical innovations through limited R&D spending
In this paper we analyze an inter-temporal optimization problem of a representative firm that invests in horizontal and vertical innovations and that faces a constraint with respect to total R&D spending. We find that there may exist two different steady-states of the economy when the amount of research spending falls short of an endogenously determined threshold: one with higher productivities...
متن کاملOptimal R&D investment with learning-by-doing: Multiple steady-states and thresholds
In this paper we present an inter-temporal optimization problem of a representative R&D firm that simultaneously invests in horizontal and vertical innovations. We posit that learning-by-doing makes the process of quality improvements a positive function of the number of existing technologies with the function displaying a convex-concave form. We show that multiple steady-states can arise with ...
متن کاملCreating Value: An SME And Social Media
This study examines how firms are gaining value from using social media. Social media can be used by businesses for a range of functions, including but not limited to marketing and customer relationship management. It is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) because of its minimal cost, low barriers to participation and low level of IT skills required to use it. Th...
متن کاملDebt Maturity : What Do Economists Say ? What Do CFOs Say ?
Any homeowner who has shopped around for a mortgage would recognize many of the concerns facing the chief financial officer (CFo) puzzling over her firm’s optimal debt maturity. A CFo may ask, “Should my firm sell a long-term bond and lock in the current 30-year rate, or should my firm sell a five-year note and refinance in five years?” one of the CFo’s concerns is that the five-year loan may s...
متن کاملIntangible resources, Tobin’s q, and sustainability of performance differences
This paper tests empirically the hypothesis that the greater the intangibility of a firm’s resources, the greater the sustainability of its competitive advantage. Resource intangibility is measured by: (1) Tobin’s q and (2) the predicted value from a hedonic regression of q on several accounting measures of intangibles. Sustainability is measured by the persistence of firm-specific profits. Usi...
